Maniapoto ready for settlement wrap
Maniapoto post-settlement governance entity Te Nehenehenui is expecting more than 1000 whanau at Sunday’s Te Rangiwaituhi ceremony in Te Kuiti to sign the Maniapoto deed of settlement.
Chair Bella Takiari-Brame says the iwi is looking forward to hosting the Prime Minister and Crown officials at Te Tokanganui a Noho Marae.
The ceremony, which will include a formal apology, was delayed because of Covid 19.
Because of increased Covid cases, attendees will need to show a negative rapid antigen test.
The settlement deed acknowledges breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi including the 1863 invasion of the Waikato, confiscation of land, labeling Maniapoto as rebels, and the actions of the Native Land Court which undermined Maniapoto tribal structures and led to massive loss of land.
Compensation includes $165 million in financial redress, the return of 36 sites of cultural significance, natural resources arrangements and relationship redress with government departments.
