Universities slow to promote Māori

A Māori scientist says while universities talk about honouring the Treaty of Waitangi and encouraging more Māori academics, the numbers show little has changed in the last decade.
Dr Tara McAllister, of Te Aitanga ā Māhaki, has just won the Royal Society’s Te Kōpūnui Māori Research Award for her work on the under-representation and undervaluing of Māori academics
She says universities need to match words to action.
“Universities are kind of going around saying yes, we honour the Treaty, and they’ve developed all these policies around equity, diversity and inclusion. And we’ve got updated data now, and we know that for at least ten years the percentage of Maori academics has stayed around five, six percent.”
Dr McAllister says Maori academics need a strong presence at pakeha universities – but there are stark differnces to the feeling at a Maori-dominated institution like Te Wananga o Raukawa.
