Interest cut from legal aid bills

Low income people using legal aid can look forward to some relief with the first reading up the Legal Services Amendment Bill under urgency last week.
The bill, which undoes some aspects of National’s 2011 overhaul, was sent to the justice select committee for public submissions.
Minister of Justice Kiritapu Allan says it will improve access to legal aid as well as remove the user charge payment and interest on unpaid debt.
“Not only will this provide stress relief to those who are facing it but it will save people from paying more money than is necessary from getting support that is often absolutely necessary for fair participation in the justice system,” she says,
The Bill was supported at first reading by National, ACT and the Greens,
