Waka Kotahi ready for climate adaption plan
Waka Kotahi is releasing a climate adaption plan as it tries to work out what can be done about increasing storm damage.
Rob Campbell, the maintenance and operations manager for the East Coast region, which has been hit by several major storms over the past two years, says the damage is only going to get worse as storms become more frequent.
“There’s a lot of areas down State Highway 35 and many of our coastal routes that are already quite vulnerable so we’re preparing a climate adaption plan which will be out in December for consultation to start mapping out what can we do differently – ourselves, the councils, regional council, tangata whenua, landowners, all of these people come together to say this is real, what can we do to go forward because what we used to do isn’t going to cut it for us,” he says.
Mr Campbell says there may have to be changes in the way some small rural communities are serviced.
