Jobs big part of Māori housing plan
The chief executive of Ngati Wai Trust, says the government’s $55-million support for Māori housing in Te Taitokerau will be a boost for employment and the economy.
Ngati Wai is part of Te Pouahi o Te Taitokerau, a collective of Māori housing service providers supported by iwi, hapū and ahu whenua trust, which aims to build up to 100 affordable rental homes.
Huhana Lyndon says they want to create apprenticeships, jobs and fresh business .
“Ultimately we need to be asking the question across the rohe, when we being our people home what mahi will they have? Can we build our own workforce? Can we attach cadestships and apprenticeships into the pipeline so we are doing it for ourselves?” she says.
Huhana Lyndon says the project is a way to test new models for delivering sustainable housing.
