Parental support super-charging education
An innovative programme to support partnerships between schools and parents is winning more converts.
The Mutukaroa Project began at Auckland’s Sylvia Park School in 2010, and has spread across Aotearoa.
The principal of Papakura’s Edmund Hillary School, Kataraina Nock, says it works directly with the parents of Year 1-4 pupils, providing resources and even home support to supercharge their learning.
She says it encourages a level of engagement that is critical from the minute children come through the door at age five.
“It’s absolutely brilliant and I think will have long-lasting impacts on our children and their educational outcomes,” Ms Nock says.
She says every school should be participating in the project – especially when the Education Ministry will facilitate both staff and resources to help whanau.
