Matawāka reps needed for Auckland Māori board

The panel tasked with selecting Auckland’s Independent Māori Statutory Board is calling for candidates to the two Matāwaka seats, representing Māori from iwi outside Tamaki Makaurau.
Nominations close tomorrow at 5pm.
Panel chair Karen Wilson says nominees are expected to have knowledge and expertise of te reo, tikanga and matauranga Maori, knowledge of the geographic and socioeconomic makeup of Tamaki Makaurau, and strong existing relationships with mana whenua and with local and central government.
“There’s some specific eligibility criteria they will need to match and one of those is being acknowledged as leaders in their won community as matawaka so I think there’s a wide range of those who would be eligible as long as they are matawaka and not mana whenua,” she says.
Nominations for the seven mana whenua seats have closed, and she’s pleased with the calibre of those put forward.
