Candidate Herewini challenges Mangere wastewater dump

A Mangere-Otahuhu Local Board candidate says she’s sick of the Manukau Harbour being used as a dumping ground for the city’s pricier suburbs.
Moana Herewini has lived in Mangere Bridge for more than 20 years.
She says the community is concerned about its environment and the implications of major projects like the giant Central Interceptor pipe bringing wastewater from central Auckland down to the Mangere Pump Station.
“Traditionally, historically I would say, we have been used here in Mangere Bridge and Mangere as the toilet for Auckland, for the central business area and for the wider Auckland area so part of my standing is to make sure we get a better say in what’s happening, a better say in what’s happening to the health of our harbour, to the health of our wildlife, to the environment we are creating for our children,” Ms Herewini says.
