Rāhui for Te Tau Ihu as flood water surge
Te Tauihu iwi has placed a rāhui across the entire northern coastline of the South Island as floodwaters continue to pose significant disruptions across the rohe.
The rāhui covers the area from Te Parinui o Whiti (the White Bluffs) in the east, and west to Kahurangi Point, including Aorere and Tai Tapu.
It prevents the gathering of seafood and kai as well as swimming and entering the water.
Iwi Emergency Management Rōpū leads Barney Thomas said the rāhui would remain in place as long as te taiao dictates.
Marae, iwi and Māori social services have been supporting their communities to get through the stressful time.
On Saturday Waikawa Marae was activated to support people stranded in Picton with the temporary closure of State Highway 1 between Tuamarino and Koromiko.
A state of emergency remains in place for Nelson and Marlborough.
