Māori caught in fish industry squall
The chief executive of Te Ohu Kaimoana says climate and environmental changes pose massive challenges for the nearly $5 billion New Zealand fishing industry.
Lisa te Heuheu says Maori will be disproportionately affected because fisheries are the biggest asset for many iwi.
She will have a strong message for this week’s Seafood New Zealand conference in Nelson.
“The Seafood Conference for me is an opportunity to put everybody on notice that we can’t act in a commercial vacuum anymore. we need to be thinking about the communities around us and how we contribute to the places and spaces that are really important to our people,” she says.
Ms Te Heuheu says the sector is currently challenged by high fuel costs and a shortage of workers.
