Vagahau Niue in need of rescue

The Minister for Pacific Peoples says he’s keen to support Niueans living in Aotearoa who want to revive and maintain their indigenous language.
Vagahau Niue has been so dominated by English that it is now listed by UNESCO as severely endangered.
The topic came up last week in bilateral talks between Aupito William Sio and Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta with Niue’s premier Dalton Tagelagi.
“We talked about language and culture and talked about how here in Aotearoa New Zealand we’ve got 40,000 Niueans wanting to learn more of their reo and how do we link back to the work they are doing in the islands,” Mr Sio says.
A free Fakaako e Vagahau Niue app was released this month by Kiwa DIgital to help learners.
