Sisters’ tourney draws kotiro to league
A new rugby league competition aimed at boosting participation rates of kotiro and wāhine in Te Tai Tokerau is having the desired effect.
The first Peters Sisters Competition kicks off this weekend in Whangarei with six teams signed up.
The competition is named after Hilda, Rona and Kahurangi Peters of Te Aupōuri, who have all played in the NRL Women’s Premiership and the Māori All-Stars.
Arihi Reihana, who coaches and plays for Whangārei Hauāwhiowhio, says the competition is not just about rugby league but a way to uplift, encourage and provide opportunities for girls and women across the board.
The three-week tourney will lead into the Northern Swords selection.
