Canterbury scholarships for low decile schools
To mark its 150th birthday next year, the University of Canterbury is offering scholarships for hundreds of lower decile school-leavers who may not have considered university as part of their future.
The ‘free degree’ scholarships will cover full fees for 150 current South Island decile 1-7 school students in 2023, with a further 150 scholarships for 2024.
Sacha McMeeking, it’s executive director of Māori, Pacific and equity, says the new scholarships are named Te Kakau a Māui.’
The Kakau is a handle for multiple tools, and Māui is the figure of legend known for masting a series of challenges.
She says the university’s vision is to close the equity gap in participation, retention and success rates between currently under-served ākonga and the general university population.
Currently, more than 80 percent of scholarship recipients come from high decile schools.
Applications for 2023 Te Kakau a Māui scholarships will remain open until 15 August 2022. (See more here: https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/uc150/scholarship/)
