Ardern vs Albanese on 501’s
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says new Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese can expect a call for her on that country’s deportation policy.
Thousands of New Zealanders have been sent back across the Tasman since Australia changed its visa policy in 2015.
Ms Arden says she looks forward to working with the new Labor prime minister and hopes he will tackle what has become a sore spot in trans-Tasman relations.
“The area where we have had grievance is where individuals are being deported who have utterly no connection with New Zealand and I will be utterly consistent, no matter who the leader is in Australia, with raising that grievance,” she says.
Ms Ardern says all countries have a right to set migration policies, but Australia must take responsibility for those who are raised and have lived the majority of their lives there.
