Peters’ old patch Tauranga now a sideshow

Senior New Zealand First member Shanes Jones has confirmed the party is sitting out the Tauranga by-election.
He says the party still enjoys a strong level of support in the seat, which was held by leader Winston Peters for 21 years.
But its eye is on the general election.
“Our rangatira Winston has pointed out that it’s really a time for people to be deeply conscious of their budgets, of tightening their belts. There’s just no way we are going to play the game when the real match is next year,”
Shane Jones says Tauranga has deep-seated infrastructure problems brought on by the dysfunction of the city council over the years, which will take a lot of money and the government will resolve.
