Tough times on horizon for Māori fisheries

Strong headwinds are coming for the Māori fisheries after the second most profitable year in the 30 years of the Māori fisheries settlement.
Te Ohu Kaimoana chair Rangimarie Hunia says the settlement trust’s annual meeting yesterday got an update on the prospects for inshore fishing company Moana and the joint venture deepwater company Sealord.
She says global uncertainty, disrupted supply chains and labour shortages are set to make an impact heading into the third year of Covid.
“We are going to go on to tough times and so we’ve got to be ready for that. I don’t think we are going to be unaffected. I’m proud of the team for highlighting that. They call them very strong headwinds and they’re calling them tsunami coming our way. We’ve just got to prepare ourselves for that,” Ms Hunia says.
Iwi at the AGM also endorsed Te Ohu Kaimoana’s approach in negotiations over the Rangitāhua Ocean Sanctuary that it push the Government to adopt a mātauranga Māori approach to marine protection, conservation and sustainability without sacrificing Māori commercial rights.
