The Māori Party says taking GST off food is a better way to tackle the high cost of living than short term fuel tax cuts.
Co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer is calling for the immediate removal of the tax from fresh fruit, vegetables and other staple food items.
“It’s not overly complex. Australia and many European countries have exempted food from their sales and tax regimes, and it’s not particularly controversial. It needs to happen now,” she says.
