Northernmost iwi Ngāti Kuri has launched a plan to have all eligible members vaccinated by the end of summer.
Iwi board strategic lead Sheridan Waitai says #HīkoiTo100 includes social media campaigns, branded clothing, and other activities building to an outdoor music festival to celebrate iwi resilience with those who are vaccinated.
She says it’s encouraging people to be a good ancestors and looks back to previous epidemics like influenza and tuberculosis which devastated the iwi.
#HīkoiTo100 will be supported by Pou Uara, a community resilience team which has been supporting people with information, care kete and kai packages since the start of the pandemic in 2020.
Ngāti Kuri has also declared all campsites in its rohe including Kapowairua, Rarawa and Taputaputa Covid-19 safe spaces, meaning only double vaccinated manuhiri are welcome.
