Māori lever needed on Health NZ decisions

Green MP Elizabeth Kerekere says the new Māori Health Authority needs a veto over Health NZ if it is to ensure the right level of resource goes into Māori health.
The boards for the two new bodies were appointed last week, and they will now start establishing their priorities and the ways they will work together.
Dr Kerekere says it’s important the Māori authority is not treated as an add-on but is able to influence wider spending decisions.
“They cannot just keep us separate and have this separate thing because we will always be using healthcare across all the services that will be available. Māori will not be in control of every aspect of every provider our people will use and need,” she says.
