Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu this week launched a news service.

It will feature one story a night on the Tahu News Facebook page and the Tahu FM site.

Chief financial officer Darren Beatty says a pilot effort during last year’s lockdown to keep whānau connected convinced the rūnanga there was scope for a te ao Māori news provider in Te Waipounamu.

"Māori news and current affairs is often quite te Ika a Maui-centric. We are looking to change that by making sure we have people on the ground in the takiwā, not just Ōtautahi centric but across the wider Te Waipounamu takiwā telling our stories," he says.

The service is funded by Te Māngai Pāho, and Mr Beatty says the iwi is also eying the $42 million for Māori broadcasting in the Budget to fund further growth.
