Iwi leaders at sharp end of vax programme

Expect iwi leaders to be given a place at the front of the queue when it comes to dishing out the Covid-19 vaccine.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the Government is well aware of potential problems with vaccine hesitancy, and it will do its best so assure people the Pfizer vaccine chosen is safe and effective.
Priority for the roll out is people working in high risk positions at the border, and people with co-morbidities like diabetes or other health issues which would make them more vulnerable if they do get Covid.
Government is working with Māori and Pasifika health providers on the details delivering the vaccine and convincing people to get the jab.
"Me sitting on national TV and getting a vaccine, is that necessarily what's going to shift people's view or is it that we need people in communities who are trusted and known and looked to as being role models who can both communicate why the vaccine is so important and also demonstrate they will be getting it themselves, and we have had conversations with iwi leaders about that and so reaching out into every group that we can to try to get that support," Ms Ardern says.
