Te Puea homeless programme a prize pick

Te Puea Marae's efforts to address homelessness in South Auckland have earned it a finalists spot in the community section or the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards – Ngā Tohu Pou Kōhure o Aotearoa.
Marae chair Hurimoana Dennis says it has plans to build another eight to ten emergency housing units, doubling its capacity to both take in families and add the support they need to transition to permanent homes.
"There is a bit of a transition period where we can understand the family. Clearly they don't have a place to go but they have other things to contend with too – managing their own budget, employment issues, driver's licences," he says.
The awards are set to take place on 31 March.
