Iwi trust helps with homeless plan
Ngāti Whātua housing and mental health support service Kāhui Tū Kaha is set to open 150 transitional housing properties within the next two months in a partnership with the Government’s homelessness action plan.
Marama Davidson, the Associate Housing Minister for Homelessness, says relationships with community providers are an important part of the plan.
She says Māori and iwi housing providers offer critical, kaupapa Māori focussed, accommodation and support.
The Government this week reached the milestone of 1000 transitional housing places added in the first year of the plan.
Housing Minister Megan Woods says transitional housing provides, short-term accommodation and vital wrap-around support services for people who have been homeless or living in overcrowded situations.
Six in 10 of the new transitional housing places are for families with children.
Forty-three per cent are newly constructed homes.
