Party party after Hosking caves on Tamihere defamation

Newstalk ZB host Mike Hosking and his bosses have made a sizeable contribution to the Māori Party’s election fighting fund.
That’s how Māori Party co-leader and Tāmaki Makaurau candidate John Tamihere describes this morning’s end to his defamation action, with the high profile shock jock reading an apology on the station and a lawyer for NZME reading out the same apology to him in the High Court at Auckland.
They admitted the Mike’s Minute segment in December 2018 accusing Mr Tamihere of personally benefiting from funds paid to the North Island Whānau Ora Commissioning Agency he heads was untrue.
The back down means a two-week trial set for August will no longer go ahead, and the media company will pay a confidential sum in settlement.
Mr Tamihere says he will direct some of that to the campaign.
"And that I think is a marvellous result," he says.
He says Mike Hoskings’ racial stereotyping casts suspicion on all Māori organisations involved in financial transactions.
