Marae landings in Kaipara Wharf plan
Landing places are being developed at three Kaipara harbourside marae as part of a $5 million Provincial Growth Fund project to improve the harbour’s water transport network.
Kaipara District Council has earmarked $400,000 to work with the Māori communities at Arapaoa near Tinopai, Ōruawharo south-west of Kaiwaka and Ōtamatea at Batley.
Beach landings are characteristic of Abel Tasman National Park tourism.
Other projects include a new $1.8 million wharf at remote Pouto near the harbour’s north head, an $800,000 upgrade for Pahi wharf, and a $600,000 pontoon upgrade at Dargaville to serve as the Kaipara Harbour Wharves ferry transport hub.
Other wharves and jetties will be upgraded in future years.
Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones says the upgraded network should encourage tourism, especially from Aucklanders keen to enjoy their own back yard.
