Tāmaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare says he’s seeing progress on the Government’s housing agenda.

Labour has come under fire from the Opposition for failing to meet its benchmarks for the now-abandoned KiwiBuild target of 100,000 homes.

But Mr Henare says a conference he went to this week of Kainga Ora workers talking about the challenges that face them, and the opening of 19 homes in Takanini built in partnership with community housing provider Community of Refuge Trust, are signs of incremental progress.

"That’s how we solve the problem. This isn't a case of building 100,000 homes and thinking people will fill them. We have to continue to work with the community to match them with the homes being built, so I'm happy we have come a long way but in the words of my grandfather, we have come too far not to go further," he says.
