The Electricity Authority is calling on New Zealanders to help reshape the electricity market, launching a public consultation aimed at making it easier for households to compare power plans, switch retailers and access better value for their electricity.

The consultation seeks feedback on improving how electricity product information is shared, with the goal of giving consumers clearer choices and encouraging greater competition between electricity retailers.

The Authority says many consumers struggle to understand the differences between electricity plans because pricing structures and product information vary widely between retailers. Standardising how information is presented would make it easier for people to compare offers and identify plans that best suit their needs.

The proposal forms part of the Electricity Authority’s broader Consumer Mobility Roadmap, a programme designed to improve competition by making it simpler to switch providers, compare prices and access new energy services as New Zealand’s electricity system becomes increasingly digital.

Among the planned improvements are easier-to-read electricity bills, better access to information about available plans, a new comparison and switching service, and improved data standards that could support future digital tools capable of helping consumers identify savings automatically.

The Authority says improved information sharing will also help prepare the electricity sector for future innovations, including smart home technologies, artificial intelligence-powered energy management and the Government’s proposed Consumer Data Right framework.

The consultation comes at a time when many New Zealand households continue to face rising living costs, with electricity bills remaining a significant expense for whānau. Consumer advocates have consistently argued that confusing pricing structures and inconsistent information make it difficult for many families to know whether they are paying more than necessary for electricity.

For Māori communities, particularly those in rural and lower-income households, access to affordable and transparent electricity pricing can have a significant impact on household budgets. Improved competition and clearer information may help whānau make more informed decisions about their power use and reduce energy costs over time.

The Electricity Authority says the proposed changes are intended to create a more consumer-focused electricity market where households have greater confidence in understanding their bills, comparing retailers and choosing plans that meet their needs.

Public feedback will help shape the final design of the proposals before any regulatory changes are introduced.

As New Zealand’s electricity system evolves with renewable energy, battery storage and smarter technologies, the Authority says ensuring consumers have simple, transparent information will be critical to delivering greater choice, stronger competition and better outcomes for households across Aotearoa.
