Waitemata DHB steps up Maori recruitment

In what’s seen as a first for district health boards, Waitematā DHB has appointed a Māori workforce recruitment consultant to bring more Māori into its workforce.
Charlene Macrae, who is affiliated with Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kahu and Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairoa, will help develop ways to incorporate kaupapa Māori into the recruitment process.
She says she’s looking to give the recruits a sense of belonging, a sense of connectedness and a sense of being proud to be Māori.
"Through kaupapa Māori, we will not only attract more Māori to consider Waitematā DHB but we will keep more Māori because they safe and they feel valued and they feel they really are making a difference," she says.
Charlene Macrae says only about 4 per cent of Waitematā DHB's current workforce is Māori, compared with a Māori making up one in 10 of its catchment.
