Bishop calls in ministry for Te Aute clean up
A parent of a boy at Te Aute College is disappointed a commissioner has been put into the historic Māori boarding school rather than letting the recently-elected board of trustees address problems of bullying and falling rolls.
Jason Ake says Anglican Bishop Don Tamihere, representing the Hawke’s Bay school’s proprietor, asked the Education Ministry to appoint a commissioner without consulting the board of trustees.
He says the board was only three months old and represented a desire by parents for change and accountability.
"It was put in place to address issues – the declining pass rates and achievement levels at the school and the bullying that occurs there, and calling the previous board to account for some of the decisions that they have made," Mr Ake says.
He’s concerned at how a commissioner could affect the culture of the school, which has nurtured generations of Māori leaders.
