Future of teaching strike
A south Auckland teacher says creating an environment that will attract more Māori and Pasifika teachers is a critical objective for today's teacher megastrike.
Teachers from primary, secondary and wharekura are out of class and on the streets today to push their claims for more money and a more reasonable workload.
Moehau Husband says there is a shortage of teachers in Auckland, so when teachers are sick their classes get shared among other teachers, creating greater stress.
He says the composition of the workforce is critical.
"We just want the Government to recognise (we are) sharing our Māori stories, our taonga tuku iho, not only to our Māori rangatahi or taiohi but our Pasifika stories as well and trying to put a plaster over the wound by attracting offshore kaiako to the profession won't engage our children into the importance of education," Mr Husband says.
