Wharehuia Milroy set high level of excellence and mana
In the front rank of Māori leaders and great scholars.
That’s how MP Shane Jones describes Wharehuia Milroy, who died early this morning in his 82nd year.
He says Professor Milroy was up with a previous generation of leaders like Sir Kingi Ihaka, Katarina Mataira and John Rangihau who came from backgrounds and communities where the Māori language was a natural part of their upbringing.
The University of Waikato professor and co-founder of Te Panekiretanga was cherished and much respected by his own people in Ngāi Tūhoe.
"Obviously also somebody who was much loved by all the rangatahi and those searching for the language and to create a higher level of excellence in terms of what the language could represent in relation to mana, a higher, more refined type of scholarship and certainly he was in the front ranks of those leaders and quite frankly great scholars," Mr Jones says
