TMP role questioned

There’s a call for the Māori Media Review to pay particular attention to the activities of the Māori broadcast funding agency.
Academic, broadcaster, and former chair of the Māori screen workers group Ngā Aho Whakaari Dr Ella Henry, says Te Māngai Pāho seems to be extending its role beyond funding to telling broadcasters and programme makers what to do.
Many Māori are now looking to New Zealand On Air for funds because its processes are faster and more explicit.
Dr Henry says in its 25 years Te Māngai Pāho should have worked out how to deliver some rangatiratanga for Maori.
"The media review I hope casts a spotlight on what is it actually there for? If it's there to empower Māori, it should be ensuring that Māori organisations. authentic Māori storytellers, Māori funding, Māori training are all actually built into it's kaupapa rather than trying to get the chapeast half hour of television that it can," she says.
