Reforms will rip guts out of trade training
Industry training organisations want a chance to help design reform vocational training.
ITOs held a hui at the Waikato Taui College at Hopuhopu last week to discuss the reforms and their impact on Māori.
Sam Napia from SkillsActive ITO says the proposals from Education Minister Chris Hipkins to save struggling polytechs and bring together the 16 existing industry training providers into a single entity won’t work.
He says they’ve been designed by officials with no idea how the sector works.
"Co-design a system that is going to work because your current proposals Minister Hipkins are going to rip the guts out of a system that is delivering for Māori. We are interested in improving that system," Mr Napia says.
The ITOs want at least a six week extension to the consultation period.
