Ruapehu District Council is seeking descendants of people whose headstones in the Raetihi cemetery were destroyed in what appears to be a random attack.
Some of the graves date back a century.
Honey Winter from Ngāti Uenuku says the seven headstones came from both Māori and Pakeha families.
"I don't think it's targeted at any particular families, just outright stupidity," she says.
Ruapehu mayor Don Cameron says there has been a spate of attacks to property in Raetihi.
