Rongotai MP Paul Eagle is welcoming plans to reintroduce Māori wardens to the streets of Wellington.
He says the revival of the wardens a decade ago bypassed the capital, so it's good it is finally catching up.
Unlike other voluntary community patrols, the wardens have their own statute, which can help with their work, especially in the interface with the city's bars and restaurants.
"I always say to them, the great thing about Māori Wardens is that they're your eyes and ears, but they're also on the front line. They're always talking to people, and not just Maori either. They are keeping people safe, and they'll help you out. When they hear things like that, they're more welcoming to these guys coming on the streets" he says.
Paul Eagle says in his previous role with the police Māori and ethnic team he saw the good work done by wardens.
