Simplicity a winner at Manu Korero
A high standard is on display as secondary school students on Tamaki Makaurau try to win spots in the national Maori speech competitions.
The Manu Korero regionals have been broken in two for Tamaki Makaurau and last week speeches were held at Orakei for both West and Central Auckland with both South and East Auckland who held their competition in May.
Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Hoani Waititi tumuaki Hare Rua says he was impressed with the depth of thought going into the speeches both in Maori and English.
He also appreciated the simplicity of the language in te reo.
"I love simplicity when kids are speaking as opposed to finding every word they can find in some dictionary or learn from somebody, which not too many people know the meaning of the word. Also so that you get some understanding for the kaiwhakarongo when the child is speaking," he says.
Hare Rua says tribal dialects were on display, as many schools encourage their tauira to explore their own tribal mita or ways of talking.
