Tuwharetoa extends Taupo management deal

Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board has extended its joint management agreement with Waikato Regional Council to include not only the upper Waikato River catchment but also Lake Taupo and the tributaries flowing into and out of the lake.
Chief executive Topia Rameka says it's a further step toward realising the tribe's tino rangatiranga and mana motuhake over its taonga tuku iho.
Waikato Regional Council CEO Vaughan Payne says the council has seen the value of the inter-generational vision Ngati Tuwharetoa brings to decision making, including its extensive experience and knowledge of freshwater resources.
The Taupo Waters agreement signed this morning sets out how the regional council and the trust board will work together when carrying out specific legislative duties and functions, including exercising powers under the Resource Management Act.
