New agency to manage fisheries
New agency to manage fisheries
Maori fisheries settlement trust Te Ohu Kaimoana is welcoming tonight’s launch of Fisheries New Zealand as a separate agency within the Ministry for Primary Industries.
Chief executive Dion Tuuta says Fisheries Minister Stuart Nash’s decision to create the agency means he should have the specialised support he needs to manage a complex sector and to do his future fisheries review.
It reverses the decision of the previous Government.
"When the Ministry for Fisheries was initially absorbed into the greater Ministry for Primary Industries it was supposed to result in a lot of efficiencies but Te Ohu Kaimoana believed that was not a positive step for taking fisheries forward," Mr Tuuta says.
The new agency will be headed by Dan Bolger, an agricultural economist who previously heads the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry’s strategy and performance group.
