Young Maori men fronting for Northcote by elections

Another Maori is set to enter parliament in the Northcote by-election on June 9.
National has picked economist Dan Bidois to contest the seat left vacant with the resignation of former health minister Jonathan Coleman.
Mr Bidois, from Ngati Maniapoto, is a strategy manager for supermarket operator Foodstuffs.
He’s up against Labour’s Shanan Halbert, who trimmed Dr Coleman’s majority by a third to 6210 in last year’s general election.
Both are aged 35.
Mr Halbert, who Rongowhakaata and Ngati Kahungunu whakapapa, is relationships manager at Te Wananga o Aotearoa.
Despite the seat being safe National, he believes he has a good chance of winning because of the boost to Labour’s popularity since the election.
