Labour's Northcote candidate Shanan Halbert believes the by-election is a sign of the generational change in New Zealand politics.
Both Mr Halbert and National's candidate Dan Bidois are 35 and both have Maori whakapapa.
Mr Halbert says he will put his job at Te Wananga o Aoteraroa to one side and immerse himself in the campaign for the 7 weeks until the June 9 vote.
While the seat is considered safe Natiobal, he believes he can build on the momentum of the general election, when he cut the majority of former MP Jonathan Coleman by a third, and also build on the spirit Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has brought to Government.
"The success of our prime minister has a set the platform for New Zealand to lead a younger parliament and that means we are more representative. We are talking about issues young people actually care about. We are getting involved in places and spaces where young people are," Mr Halbert says.
The electorate has thelargest number of 30 to 45 year olds of any in the country.
