Ngati Rangi is looking forward to working closely with the crown rather than being at the other end of consultations.
The Ruapehu iwi signed a deed of settlement on Saturday that will give it $17 million in cash, the Rotokura lakes and a say in governance of the Whangaehu River.
It will also get defence land at Waiouru, which it will gift back to the crown.
Chief negotiator Che Wilson says the tribe deliberately decided to take cash rather than land.
"What happens in treaty settlements – often iwi are given the scraps and then have to put so much money in to tidy up those places. We chose not to take much land back but in time we will make sure the land is tidied up before we enter into that bigger conversation about what should be returned," he says.
Mr Wilson says some things should remain in crown ownership because it's not appropriate iwi pay for the upkeep of things that need to be looked after on behalf of the nation.
