Bradbrook takes defamation harpoon to Whaleoil

Former Maori tobacco control advocate Shane Bradbrook and public health academics Doug Sellman and Boyd Swinburn have the green light to continue their defamation case against blogger Cameron Slater, public relations advisor Carrick Graham and former National MP Katherine Rich.
High Court Justice Matthew Palmer rejected arguments the case should struck out because articles published on Mr Slater’s Whaleoil blog were the honestly-held opinion of the writer or had qualified privilege as part of robust political debate about alcohol, sugar, fat, and tobacco.
The case was also not out of time because many of the articles were still accessible.
The case was prompted by the 2014 book Dirty Politics, which alleged Ms Rich, who now runs the Food and Grocery Council, paid through Mr Graham to have Mr Slater run multiple posts with Doug Sellman.
