An Auckland iwi is working with its local board to protect one of the city’s geological treasures.
Te Pukaki Tapu o Poutukeka Crater near Auckland International Airport was used as a dirt track speedway in the 1920s, undermining the stability of the landscape.
Te Akitai Waiohua Iwi Authority and Pukaki Maori Marae Committee chair Karen Wilson says the crater is starting to collapse in on itself, taking with it pa sites and urupa.
An archaeological survey last year led heightened concern about the deterioration, and the eroding southwest rim of the crater is now being planted and fenced.
It’s a taonga the iwi is happy to share with the wider community.
"Because of the local board pushing this take, the community came to assist us and we hope it will become more community oriented because although we have the responsibility it is shared because it is a shared history that we are trying to protect, alongside Mangere-Otahuhu Local Board," Ms Wilson says.
