Iwi fed up with delay and want a settlement
The chair of Ngapuhi claim negotiating body Tuhoronuku says tribe members are fed up with delay and want it to get on with a settlement.
A new poll by Horizon Research of just over 500 Ngapuhi members has found 70 percent support for Tuhoronuku to continue as the mandated body.
Hone Sadler says that’s consistent with previous polls, and is a larger sample than the people who took part in the writing the Maranga Mai report, which is being held up by Tuhoronuku’s critics as the only way ahead.
Tuhoronuku commissioned the poll and held consultation hui around the country after Te Kotahitanga o Nga Hapu o Ngapuhi refused to engage with it.
Mr Sadler says it’s time to stop allowing Te Kotahitanga to block progress.
"Te Kotahitanga is not a mandated entity. It doesn't have any structure. It doesn't have a plan. It has not sought a mandate and it hasn't declared who are the hapu they represent." he says.
Tuhoronuku is keen to talk to the incoming Government and believes it can complete a settlement by 2020.
