Warrior snaps sought for book
Military historian Sir Wira Gardiner is looking for photos of 400 members of the 28 Maori Battalion’s B Company.
He’s already got images of 500 of the 900 men who served in the company, which drew recruits from eastern and central Bay of Plenty, Coromandel and Waikato.
They’ll be included in a book commissioned by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage and the B Company History Trust.
Trust chair Graeme Vercoe says Sir Wira has done an amazing job of shaping the men’s stories from a Maori perspective.
There is one surviving member of B Company, 93-year-old Robert (Bom) Gillies.
Scanned photos can be be emailed to: info@28maoribattalion.org.nz
