Whale Watch resumes trips
Whale Watch Kaikoura is back on the water.
The first commercial trips went out this week, just 7 weeks after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that cut off the town and lifted the coast, making it impossible to use facilities at the Kaikoura marina.
Some remedial work has been done on the commercial slipway, but full service is still some months away.
Chief executive Kauahi Ngapora says the company has modified a trailer to allow it to load passengers onto the vessel Tohora in the marina, subject to tides.
That’s much like how passengers were loaded in the early days of whale watching.
It is starting with three trips a day, down from the normal 16 at this time of the year.
