Waikaremoana centre evokes scorched earth history

Vision of Te Wharehou o Waikaremoana

A new visitors centre for Lake Waikaremoana is set to open this Friday.

Te Wharehou o Waikaremoana is a Ngai Tuhoe and the Department of Conservation project, replacing a heritage 1970s building by the late Ngati Kahungunu architect John Scott that was demolished in September.

The new centre designed by architects Tennant Brown uses the principles of the Living Building and Community Challenge.

It features charred cladding on two large panels at either end of the building symbolic of the scorched earth policy against Tuhoe 150 years ago.

Them panels were created by iwi members and staff from sustainable timber company Abodo, using the traditional Japanese shou sugi ban method of preserving wood by burning the surface of the timber to varying degrees of char.

The Visitor’s Centre includes ticketing (for the great walk), café and kitchen, administration, retail and a wananga space.
