Urban kaumatua look for role
Auckland-based kaumatua and kuia will tomorrow discuss whether they need to form a formal roopu to advance their concerns.
Hui organiser Wimutu Te Whiu says many kaumatua and kuia are concerned their voices are missing when it comes to discussing treaty settlements or national issues like water.
He says a Poumata Kaumatua Kuia would allow them to bring a perspective to issues that can be overlooked by younger people.
"It’s not about anything politial. It's about no matter where you come from, you have kaumatua status and you have a voice about issues that concern Maoridom," Mr Te Whiu says.
The hui to discuss the formation of a Poumata Kaumatua Kuia is at Hoani Waititi Marae starting at 10am Wednesday.
