Pacific flair in Ford furniture
Hand made furniture with a Pacific flair is on show in a pop up exhibition in Grey Lynn this weekend.
It’s by Sam Ford, who has whakapapa to Ngati Tukairangi of Ngai Te Rangi
He’s well known as a musician, but picked up his new craft during a 15 year stint in London, where he worked as a conservator at the National Gallery.
"I needed some furniture when I moved to London and I had a job with some nice furniture so I thought I’d make myself a table and I thought ‘I enjoy this,’ so I ended up making screens, couches, beds, chairs, whatever you like. It all has this Pacific Island theme. I use a lot of tapa cloth and matting," he says.
Sam Ford’s furniture is shown alongside sculptures by Tui Hobson, whose wok reflects her Rarotongan heritage.
The Tapa & Tiare Exhibition is a 3 Grosvenor St, Grey Lynn from Today until Monday.
