Celebration of Maori journalism.
Maori storytelling will be celebrated tonight at Massey University’s Nga Kupu Ora Maori Book and Journalism Awards.
There are 13 books in contention, including Patricia Grace’s first novel in 10 years and Danny Keenan’s history of Te Whiti O Rongomai and the Resistance of Parihaka.
It’s also the first time journalism has been included, with Iulia Leilua, Renee Kahukura, Maiki Sherman and Kereama Wright competing for the tohu.
Massey spokesperson Raewyn Rasch says Maori are well served by their journalists.
"Maori journalists have been doing an amazing job for many years and really gone unrecognised and it's a pretty tough gig being a Maori journalist. We really wanted to not only celebrate what they've been doing but also to encourage people nto the media," says Raewyn Rasch.
The 2016 Nga Kupu Ora Awards will be presented this evening at a ceremony at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
